UFC Vs. Strikeforce: MMA Needs A Super Bowl

Mixed martial arts (MMA) needs a superbowl. An annual fight card pitting Strikeforce and UFC champs against each other would do the trick.

Jan 8, 2012 - When Zuffa, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) first bought Japan's Pride Fighting Championships, UFC president Dana White promised fans there would be an "annual MMA superbowl." Unfortunately Pride went down in flames without a Japanese TV deal and Zuffa instead shipped its best fighters to the UFC.

Will a Lack of Star Power Hurt UFC PPV Buys in 2012?

When the UFC announced its deal with FOX earlier this year, it was assumed by most that the sport was primed to hit new highs in 2012, but with major stars either injured or retiring, the new year could be harder than most anticipated.

In the past few months, the UFC has lost its three biggest PPV draws for various amounts of time.

Anderson Silva is suffering from a shoulder injury and is likely out until mid-2012, Georges St-Pierre blew out his knee and will miss most or all of the new year and Brock Lesnar officially retired from the sport after his loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141.

These three have headlined most of the major UFC events over the past three years, and their loss cannot be overstated.

Luckily for the UFC, there is still hope for PPV buys to increase in 2012, even without their biggest draws available.

2011 was undoubtedly the year of Jon Jones, and as long as he is still primed and ready to compete in 2012, the UFC should be able to reach their goals.

Throw in the emergence of champions Frankie Edgar, Jose Aldo and Junior dos Santos and the organization has plenty of exciting fighters to hold their own in terms of PPV buys.

Perhaps more important than the champions is the crop of contenders that have moved into title contention over the past 12 months.

Urijah Faber is one of the most popular fighters in the sport today, and he has earned himself a title fight against Dominick Cruz at some point in the new year, and other top draws like Rashad Evans, Overeem and Chael Sonnen could all get title opportunities in the next 12 months.

While the loss of Silva, GSP and Lesnar will definitely hurt the organization going forward, they have proven time and time again that they don’t have to rely on stars to sell fights and they have a great group of new potential stars waiting in the wings to pick up where the others left off.

My Day is Finally HERE!

7 Years of fighting the system I finally got my beautiful wife over to the United States of America the best Christmas preasent I could have!I knows this has nothing to do with the UFC this will be the last time I will mention this on this blog.My best advise is to never give up when the chips are down keep on fighting until you win.I remember on UFC fight I saw whe one guy recieved a belly punch that broke his ribs and he had one shot he he the other guy square in the face and knocked him out that was one hell of a match up.

Making bad comments and insults

Frank Hyden, MMATorch contributor feels that several of the comments made by some of the UFC Fighters were inappropriate. Miguel made remark about a rape van,saying "If a rape van were called a surprise van more women wouldn't mind going for rides in then. Everyone loves surprises." Forrest Griffin said that was also inappropriate, "Rape is the new missionary." The tweets that they made are insulting to women and inappropriate,It also in my opinion give the people who are trying to ban MMA events fuel saying that MMA is barbaric. The "ROCK",John Cina,Randy Orton,CM Punk and Ray Mysterio jr just to name a few they are fit,well adapted to take alot of punishment.They have some experience in fighting in a cage.The wrestlers do have alot of stamina now who will we get to train them in the mixed martial arts?Mabes some of the former WWE stars who joined the UFC you never can tell but I think they would be force to be delt with!

Dan Henderson thinks PRIDE had the best fighters in the world ...

I do watch Pride and UFC events and the big difference that I see other the UFC fights our in the cage called the Octigon and Pride matches are fought in the ring is you have more tridicional fighters in Pride UFC are more of a mixed group of fighters still both factions put on great events.
