On Saturday, Dec. 19 from The Pearl at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV, lightweight title contender Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone will take on striker extraordinaire Ed Ratcliff, while in the co-main event, Muay Thai sensation Anthony Njokuani battles former IFL star Chris Horodecki. When the smoke clears on Dec. 19, the world may know who is next in line for a crack at the WEC lightweight champion.

"Four of our top lightweights are going to be competing on Dec. 19, each with his sights set on securing a coveted shot at the world title," WEC GM Reed Harris said. "Cerrone vs. Ratcliff has the potential to be an explosive standup war. We can expect much of the same from Njokuani and Horodecki as well. This is the perfect holiday gift for fans."

In addition to the lightweight fights, two of the world’s top 10 bantamweights will be in action. In an interesting clash of styles, submission ace Rani Yahya will lock horns with the speedy Joseph Benavidez.

4 Weeks on Integrity


Here are 4 discussions on Integrity for 4 weeks that you and your child can talk about together.

Week One:
As parents are first responsiblity is to help develop the character of are children. It is not enough that they execute a perfect sidekick, perform the best at forms, or dominate competitors in the sparring ring. If they have not internalized the values of the martial arts-SELF-DISCIPLINE, HONESTY and INTEGRITY, COURAGE, CAMPASSION for others-then they have not developed into a true martial artist. Discuss with your child the importance of integrity to the martial artist. Ask them how this value is important, not only in their martial arts training, but also in other areas of their lives.

Week Two:
"Do not consider anything for your interest which makes you break your word, quit your modesty or inclines you to any practice which will not bear the light or look the world in the face."-Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, Roman Emperor,(161-180).

It is unfortunate that in today's society, many look upon the notion of integrity with skepticim and ridicule. The principles of the martial artist are not always "in vogue." However, they are the principles that will allow individuals to live lives of meaning and accomplishment. Ask your children what type of temptations they face that would encourage them to abondon their integrity. Ask them how they deal with those siuations and then ask them how their martial arts training reinforces their integrity.

Week Three:
"Associate yourself with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for 'tis better to be alone than in bad company." -George Washington, first president of US (1732-1799).

Who we spend time with will impact our character and our integrity. They will either encourage us to do those things that strengthen our integrity, or they will encourage us to do things that will undermine it. Discuss with your children the importance of choosing good friends in order to protect one's integrity. Ask them to think of examples of how they can help their friends build their intergrity and character.

Week Four:
"He who merely knows right principles is not equal to him who loves them." -Confucious

Is it enough to merely know what is right? Or is more expected of the martial artist? Forms are an excellent example for this discussion. Many will perform all the correct movements, but the true martial artist learns to value the form for the discipline and focus it produces. They spend time perfecting each technique because they understand the importance of integrity in their efforts. Encourage your children to think about why they are practicing these techniques. Ask them to identify what they learn from putting their fullest effort into perfecting each movement and ask them how they can apply that to other areas of their lives.

Amir Sadollah – MMA’s Unlikely Action Hero By Thomas Gerbasi

With no pro fights, and just a handful of amateur MMA and Muay Thai titles to his name, Richmond, Virginia’s Amir Sadollah probably seemed to be one of the easiest marks out of the 32 fighter field trying to squeeze themselves into 16 spots on The Ultimate Fighter’s seventh season.

And when he drew UFC veteran Steve Byrnes for his opening match, the one that would determine whether he got onto the show or not, things seemed to be going according to form. Not that he knew it at the time.

“Right after they announced the matchups, I didn’t have any idea of who he was and I really didn’t know anything about him,” said Sadollah of Byrnes.

That would change quickly as he attempted to do some last minute weight cutting with other prospective cast members Matt Riddle and Dante Rivera.

“You guys know this guy Steve Byrnes I’m gonna fight?” asked Sadollah.

“Yeah,” responded Rivera, “he fought in the UFC.”

“I did not know that,” deadpanned Sadollah, who then went on to not only fight Byrnes, but to beat him via a second round submission that earned him a spot on the show.

“Everybody had tough fights that day so I wasn’t offended,” he said. “I was like ‘good, then if I beat him, I deserve it.’”

Affliction MMA Folds, Will Now Sponsor The UFC

After promoting two critically acclaimed but financially disastrous mixed martial arts cards, Affliction on Friday first canceled its pay-per-view card scheduled for Aug. 1 and then opted to get out of the promotional business.

Affliction released a statement Friday evening in which it announced “a collaboration with the UFC.” It confirmed that it will cease operations as a fight promoter and that its clothing division will become a UFC sponsor.

“Our brand is synonymous with the ‘Live Fast’ approach to life and UFC is the perfect venue for us to market our brand. We have come to an agreement with the UFC which we feel will be the best for the sport and will help the UFC continue delivering the highest caliber of fights.” said Eric Foss, co-founder of Affliction.

better known to friends and fight fans as Mask, was killed in an automobile crash early Wednesday morning in Newport Beach, California.

A staunch supporter of MMA and one of the select few who can rightly claim to be a pioneer in the sport, Lewis started the TapOut clothing company with Dan Caldwell (aka Punkass) in 1997, not with a business degree and a marketing plan, but with a true love for a new sport that made an impact on him the first time he saw Royce Gracie win the first UFC tournament in 1993.

Charles "Mask" Lewis Jr, Owner and Co-Founder of Tap Out clothing line passed away shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10, 2009 in a horrific car accident in New Port Beach. Mask was driving his Ferrari when he crashed into a light pole ripping the car in half which killed him instantly. His female passenger was ejected from the Ferrari and survived but is in critical condition.

The Five Biggest Potential UFC Fights

One of the beautiful things about being a mixed martial arts (or any other combat sport, really) fan is the ability to play the “what if” game. What would happen if we matched a legend from the past against one of the new generation of fighters? What would happen if Anderson Silva faced Fedor Emelianenko?

The beauty of these debates is that there’s rarely a right or wrong answer. You might consider BJ Penn to be the best fighter in the world, and you think he’d destroy any lightweight or welterweight you matched him up against. Another fan might consider Takanori Gomi to be the best lightweight in the world.

These are valid arguments with no real correct answer, but that’s what makes the discussion so much fun.

While thinking about these fantasy matchups, I started thinking about potential UFC fights, match-ups between superstars that would be highly anticipated by most of the UFC audience. I came up with a list of ten potential fights or rematches, and I’ve whittled that list down to the five you’ll find below.

When trimming my list to these five bouts, I tried to factor in several criteria: the popularity of the fighters involved, the skill of the fighters involved, and the ability each of them have to sell a pay per view main event either alone or with another fighter of equal or slightly lesser popularity.

The Problem with UFC and MMA

Mixed Martial Arts have become more popular than ever and the UFC has exploded into the mainstream. The problem is that one of the prevailing cultures is that of the tough guy, outlaw, doesn’t care about the rule, male. This attracts, dare I say, the less than stellar people in the world that can fight but aren’t good people, and some fans thats morals aren’t the highest. Look at the recent actions of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson: he evades police, almost killing people on the road and at a bus stop, and is looking at no penalty from the UFC. I know professional athletes in other sports also have their problems, but those organizations tend to enforce behavioral standards. (for more on that look here).

So, in the grand scheme of Martial Arts, the conduct of many of the new “martial artist” drawn in by MMA is less than acceptable. Where the traditions, honor, respect, and integrity of the Arts has been one of the highest priorities through history, the focus in many MMA programs is training to fight and win, at all cost, with no emphasis in becoming a better person. So there is an entire new generation of martial artist that are more concerned with self confidence, fighting records, being tough, and gaining enough skill to just fight and not master; as opposed to the traditional focus of creating better all around people. I’ll try to organize my thoughts better and put up a longer post that says what I really want to, but I read the article link above and decided to try to start a discussion.

I realize that the above is not true of most MMA programs, but the bad are always remembered for being notorious, more than the normal are for being normal. Just think of the show “The Ultimate Fighter”, how many of the guys on there have just been punks? Think about it…
