An emotional Anderson Silva reacts to "Minotauro" Nogueira's victory at UFC 134

Originally posted by Joey Santosus on August 31, 2011, 11:47 AM CDT

The thousands of fans who packed the HSBC Arena for UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil were on their feet cheering, chanting, booing and, when Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira knocked out Brendan Schaub, even crying.

After spending an extended layoff nursing injuries, the legendary Heavyweight came into the bout an underdog and was largely expected to be facing retirement once he lost to "The Hybrid." However, when "Big Nog" knocked out his less experienced opponent in the opening round, the Brazilian fans in attendance weren't the only ones erupting. Below is back stage footage of Nogueira's team reacting to his victory, including an emotional Anderson Silva crying tears of joy. Photo: Francis Specker

Here are some articals from MMA Junkie

The Sunday Junkie: Aug. 28 edition
by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Aug 28, 2011 at 2:00 pm ET
After another legendary performance at Saturday's UFC 134 event, middleweight champion Anderson Silva further solidified his status as one of the greatest fighters in MMA history.

But is the best fighter ever to compete in the UFC octagon?

In The Sunday Junkie, our weekly reader-feedback feature, Silva was the topic du jour. And this week's winner, Canada's Dan Williams, has one primary reason why it's too soon to determine Silva's all-time ranking in the UFC.

UFC boss remains a Griffin supporter, thanks expecting dad for taking UFC 134 fight

RIO DE JANEIRO – Following Forrest Griffin's devastating loss to fellow former champ Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at Saturday night's UFC 134 event, it was fairly evident that words were not going to console him.

So UFC president Dana White did the next best thing: He gave him a ride home.

Griffin who just moments before the evening's post-event press conference received a surprise announcement that his wife was ready to give birth to their daughter some nine days early, didn't make excuses for his performance. But White said he understood completely and wanted to get him back to Las Vegas ASAP.

White admits Nogueira staved off retirement at UFC 134, now free to think title run
by John Morgan on Aug 28, 2011 at 10:25 am ET
RIO DE JANEIRO – As impossible as it may seem for a man most consider to be one of the greatest heavyweights in MMA history, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's UFC 134 win over Brendan Schaub may have been the single most important victory of his career.

You see, that's the win that allowed him to keep fighting.

While "Minotauro" remains adamant that retirement from the sport never crossed his mind despite a few recent setbacks, UFC president Dana White admitted he was already prepared to have "the talk" with the MMA legend.

UFC/FOX Sports Deal Done: TUF to Go Live, First Event Planned for November

This artical was written By Matt Juul(Featured Columnist) on August 18, 2011

The deal is done.

FOX Sports Media Group held a press conference this afternoon announcing their newly minted, seven-year deal with the UFC.

On hand for the conference were FOX Sports Media Group Chairman David Hill, co-presidents Eric Shanks & Randy Freer, FX President John Landgraf, UFC president Dana White, and UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta.

"This was it for me. This is what I always wanted," White said. "This is the pinnacle for us... to get a deal with FOX."

White also stated that, "this partnership will be amazing and will bring the sport to the next level."

The deal plans to bring four major events to the main FOX network, as well as 32 live fights and two runs of "The Ultimate Fighter" a year to the FX network. Plans also include to bring pre- and post-fight coverage, as well as other UFC programming, to Fuel TV.

One of the biggest changes, however, is to the format of the promotion's reality show, "The Ultimate Fighter".

"'The Ultimate Fighter' will be live on FX," says White, with plans to rebrand the show as "The Ultimate Fighter Live".

The show will be shot over 13 weeks, with each episode edited the week of, culminating with live fights each week.

Also, the coaches, who face off against each other at the end of each season, will have their training camps followed alongside their stint on the reality show.

But the biggest change—fans will get to vote on who fights.

"This is revolutionary television right here," said White who also promises to show the "raw, live aftermath" after each bout as well.

UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta loves the new concept and praised the FX network for being "edgy". FX President John Landgraf is also impressed with the deal, saying that FX can now "stand toe to toe with anybody".

Landgraf commented that the only thing missing from FX was live sports, programming that networks such as USA regularly offer. He went on to say that "the UFC on FX will finally put us on a level playing field with all of our competitors".

The deal to bring the UFC to FOX has actually been a long time in the making. The first live UFC event ever, UFC 37.5, was actually broadcast by FOX Sports Net's "The Best Damn Sports Show Period" in 2002.

The Rise of MMA & The UFC

This artical was written by By Clark Swihart

The UFC, or Ultimate Fighting Championships, was off to a rocky start in 2001. The first pay per view special went overtime and the viewers did not get to see the end. Additionally, the early era, when rules were much less strict, was seen as spectacle instead of sport. This has completely turned around. The UFC was able to enforce standards, recast from no holds barred to MMA, or Mixed Martial Arts, and now threatens to KO boxing

UFC is sanctioned in twenty states, and the current leadership intends to regularize it across the nation. The lucrative deal with Spike TV is certainly helping, and UFC fights and television shows are very popular. They are currently averaging 2.2 million viewers in the third season of the show "The Ultimate Fighter," which has been picked up for at least two more years. Additionally, "UFC Unleashed" and "UFC Fight Night" are showing on Spike with first run and repeat fights. In the last quarter of 2006, UFC had four pay per view events averaging 482,000 viewers. UFC is now shown in 36 countries around the world. UFC is running shows in Canada and the UK, and intends to open a UK office to expand into the European market. The increased visibility provided by the television shows has allowed the UFC to market stars, creating a media draw in their own right.

While as late as 2004 the owners, Zuffa LLC, still had $34 million in losses. However, in 2006 the UFC generated $222,766,000 in revenue on pay per view, passing WWE and boxing with the largest events nearing 800,000 viewers. There is even an agreement with THQ for worldwide rights to develop UFC based video games.

While some still see the sport as if it were still no holds barred, the most dangerous moves have been rendered illegal, and the competitors require great training and skill to succeed. With elements from various martial arts, wresting and boxing, the sport really is mixed martial arts. Failure to provide a firm grounding in all three areas will result in defeat. While the typical UFC fighter will have a preferred style, it is utterly normal to constantly evaluate strengths against weakness, and to go with whatever style seems likely to play to an opponents weakness. Matches can feature a great deal of movement as fighters dance around the ring trading blows, or can be very still, as both fighters grapple and seek submission holds.

The current rules were established by the New Jersey Athletic Control Board, and have been adopted as the "Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts" by several other states.

On 27 March 2007 Dana White, president of the UFC, announced the purchase of Pride Fighting Championships, the main competitor for the UFC. The organizations will remain separate as organizations, they will cooperate and co-promote supercards with champions and top contenders from both organizations in the same event. It is being dubbed "The SuperBowl of MMA!"

UFC on Versus 5: On the Chopping Block

Who needs a win in the worst way?

I’ve heard various people call these kinds of features — the ones that speculate about whether an athlete is going to get cut if they lose — malicious in the past. Not just mine, either; they say this of the myriad other incarnations of this post you can find on other sites.

The main complaint seems to be that we’re talking candidly about people losing their jobs, placing odds on whether it will happen, and — this is my favorite — reveling in their potential misfortune.

Yeah — I don’t revel.

Here’s the thing: in today’s economic climate, losing your job is a potential hazard for all of us, myself included. What strikes me as even more curious is that I’m pretty certain hockey writers who call for a player’s benching or their need to return to the minors don’t get called malicious; same goes for baseball too. I know there are differences in there — minor leagues, still have a contract, yadda yadda yadda — but the general sentiment is there: this guy isn’t performing and here is what I think is going to happen if he doesn’t turn it around.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the fighters needed a win to maintain their job in the UFC.

Alex Caceres (5-3)
Odds: 2-1

You’d probably recognize him if I referred to him as “Bruce Leroy,” the pseudo-character he created for himself as a member of The Ultimate Fighter in Season 12. Whatever you want to call him, the 5-3 fighter needs to bounce back from a loss in his UFC debut or he’ll find himself back on the regional circuit.

Normally, I would give a kid with an 0-1 record in the UFC and a 1-3 mark over his last four fights lower odds than the 2-1 offering listed here, but Caceres has a TUF tie and people seem to like his gimmick. I was at his fight in Seattle against Mackens Semerzier and it all week it looked to me like Caceres was just happy to be there. While I understand the sentiment and soaking up the bright lights, you’ve got to want more than to be there; you’ve got to want to stay there and excel.

I’m not sure Caceres has developed that yet, and if he can’t get through unbeaten newcomer Jim Hettes (8-0), he might not get the chance to stay around anyway.

Jason Reinhardt (20-2)
Odds: 1-9

If we’re being perfectly honest, I’m not sure how he survived to this point.

Reinhardt was beaten in quick fashion by Tiequan Zhang last time, his second loss in as many UFC bouts during his career. He’s a fortysomething veteran who found a bunch of success on low-level regional shows, but hasn’t been able to translate that to success in the UFC. A loss here to promising Edwin Figueroa (7-1) would be his second consecutive defeat and likely spell the end of the line for Reinhardt.

TJ O’Brien (16-4)
Odds: 1-9

UFC president awards a $70,000 bonus because he hated a fighter’s shorts

This artical was written by Steve Cofield

If fighters deliver on fight night for the UFC, the promotion has no problem throwing lots of cash their way. Bonuses for Fight of the Night, Submission of the Night and Knockout of the Night have turned out to be brilliant moves and really motivate the fighters.

There was no submission victory at UFC 133 so UFC president Dana White used the extra cash to award a brand new bonus -- "the thanks for getting those horrifying shorts off TV as soon as possible" bonus.

Brian Ebersole's victory was impressive, but White was happier with the fact that he no longer had to watch Dennis Hallman (pictured) in the Octagon wearing tiny, tiny blue Speedos.

White argued that Hallman's fight gear wasn't even a Speedo.
"That wasn't a Speedo. I've seen Speedos before, that had to be custom made," White said with a tone somewhere between joking and still kind of irked. "[Ebersole] deserved every dime he got!"

Even kids getting into mixed martial arts

CARTHAGE, Mo. - Mixed martial arts was once the sole domain of burly men who beat each other bloody in anything-goes brawls on pay-per-view TV.

But the sport often derided as “human cockfighting” is branching out.

The bare-knuckle fights are now attracting competitors as young as 6 whose parents treat the sport as casually as wrestling, Little League or soccer.

The changes were evident on a recent evening in southwest Missouri, where a team of several young boys and one girl grappled on gym mats in a converted garage.

Two members of the group called the “Garage Boys Fight Crew” touched their thin martial-arts gloves in a flash of sportsmanship before beginning a relentless exchange of sucker punches, body blows and swift kicks.

No blood was shed. And both competitors wore protective gear. But the bout reflected the decidedly younger face of ultimate fighting. The trend alarms medical experts and sports officials who worry that young bodies can’t withstand the pounding.

Tommy Bloomer, father of two of the “Garage Boys,” doesn’t understand the fuss.

“We’re not training them for dog fighting,” said Bloomer, a 34-year-old construction contractor. “As a parent, I’d much rather have my kids here learning how to defend themselves and getting positive reinforcement than out on the streets.”

Bloomer said the sport has evolved since the no-holds-barred days by adding weight classes to better match opponents and banning moves such as strikes to the back of the neck and head, groin kicking and head butting.

Missouri appears to be the only state in the nation that explicitly allows the youth fights. In many states, it is a misdemeanor for children to participate. A few states have no regulations.

Supporters of the sport acknowledge that allowing fights between kids sounds brutal at first. But they insist the competitions have plenty of safety rules.

“It looks violent until you realize this teaches discipline. One of the first rules they learn is that this is not for aggressive behavior outside (the ring),” said Larry Swinehart, a Joplin police officer and father of two boys and the lone girl in the garage group.

The sport, which is also known as mixed martial arts or cage fighting, has already spread far beyond cable television. Last month, CBS became the first of the Big Four television networks to announce a deal to broadcast primetime fights. The fights have attracted such a wide audience, they are threatening to surpass boxing as the nation’s most popular pugilistic sport.

Hand-to-hand combat is also popping up on the big screen. The film “Never Back Down,” described as “The Karate Kid” for the YouTube generation, has taken in almost $17 million in two weeks at the box office. Another current mixed martial arts movie, “Flash Point,” an import from Hong Kong, is in limited release.

Is Bellator in peril? How GOOD will the UFC be????

Surfing the internet I found an artical saying that Bellator is in financial peril.Bellator is only a few if any an MMA organization that is still independent from the UFC.I seen them on TV When I was still in Vietnam.I though they were pretty good. They even had a few WWE Wrestlers sighning up.

My opinion if Bellator goes under or is taken over by the UFC I think the quality of UFC programming will suffer a little.I remember whe WWE brought out WCW I thought the Quality of there events were not as good as before I mean they had a division of RAW and SMACKDOWN but was still part of WWE.

WCW Had an fantastic Idea of bringing the NWO A group of wrestlers that left WWE and was supost to take over the WCW Hulk Hogan was the leader was Hollywood Hogan in the WCW any to make a lond story short this story line lasted for a long time and at one point had better ratings then the WWE.WWE in return were mocking the older wrestlers who left WWE but they had to step it up to get ratings back in there faver.

The NWO plot lasted a while giving WWE a run for the money but over time WCW over did it and WWE had a simular idea with the theme of waring with ECW another wrestling organizan aquired by the WWE.rating went back in the faver of the WWE.Like I said in time WWE brought out ECW AND WCW.

Whith the WWE being the only major wrestling organization at the period they did not have to worry about the compitition and i believed the Quility on entainment suffered abit Im glad TNA wrestling formed haveing compition is a good thing.

Will the quality of the events if the UFC has no other MMA organization to compete with? only time will tell.Just posting my opinions here if you want to read the artical where I got my thoughts from you can do so by clicking the title above....

The 50 Greatest UFC Fights Since Dana White Became UFC President

This artical is By Andrew Mahlmann(Featured Columnist) on July 4, 2011

Originally founded in 1993, the UFC started a cultural phenomenon.

Under the guidance of Dana White, the UFC has grown to become wildly successful—but White did not get involved until 2001.

Before then, the company was fledgling.

It was because White saw limitless potential in the sport that he was able to work with long time friends, the Ferttita brothers, in purchasing the organization and its valuable brand.

White became an especially "hands on" president and is the man often credited as being most responsible for bringing the sport to where it is today.

These are the top 50 greatest UFC fights since Dana White became president.

The UFC has grown to be one of the best sports events of all time if you want to read the rest of the artical you can go to the bleacher reports website by clicking the title above....

Ortiz back in UFC spotlight

This artical is By John McMullen, Sports Network The Sports Network

Once upon a time Tito Ortiz was one of the biggest stars in mixed martial arts.

The former UFC light heavyweight kingpin was every bit the trailblazer as a Randy Couture or Chuck Liddell and by 2006, the charismatic Huntington Beach Bad Boy had exploded into one of the biggest pay-per-view draws in the world for his bouts with Liddell, Forrest Griffin, and Ken Shamrock.

Back problems took their toll, however, and when Ortiz stepped into the Octagon against rising star Ryan Bader on July 2 in Las Vegas, he hadn't tasted victory since topping a then-lightly-regarded Shamrock in October of '06.
